Benefits of the new heirloom basin
The Heirloom Basin is 20L, which is 8L more than two of the original basins. There are also 18 plants per basin vs 24 per set of 2 original basins. Overall you've got 1.1L of water per plant vs 500mL - so you can go way longer without having to refill water!
The netcups are silicone and hug the lids tighter - which we've found to reduce evaporation.
The netcups also cover the top of the rockwool - which again slows evaporation from the rockwool cube, while preventing algae growth (which wastes nutrients).
The basin has a built-in funnel which makes it easier to refill water.
The basin is made with big edge/corner radiuses to make it much easier to clean than our original basins which sometimes needed a toothbrush to clean!
The basin has a smooth/shiny surface which makes cleaning it much easier than the original basins which had a bit of surface roughness that trapped debris and dirt.
Downsides of the new basin
The plastic feels less premium than the original basins (even though it is thicker), the lid also is a tighter fit. We've had this feedback in the past and understand the concerns - however this was the only way we could make the basins so big at such a low price.
How to connect the heirloom basin to the Sun Shelf 1 or 2
The pump cables won't reach the pump controller module of the sun shelf 1 or 2. Therefore you will need a cable that can extend the range of the pump. This product below is an example which should work - it is 1m (which is more than you need, 50cm would also work if they are available online).
